Klaserie Sands River Camp is a place so many safari travellers have been waiting for. This understated, simple yet beautiful camp takes tourists back to what wilderness exploration was all about in the beginning, but with the added luxuries.
There is something truly incredible about setting off deep into The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, an almost forgotten 60 000 hectares of pristine wilderness, which is part of the Greater Kruger National Park. At Klaserie Sands River Camp you are allowed the opportunity to explore this unique part of South Africa, which is still largely untouched. Staying at this camp is not about check lists, or reaching Big 5 goals, here you can restore your soul while rediscovering Africa as it should be.
Lee-Ann and Louis Rautenbach run this intimate, eight bed camp, as an extension of their own home, their genuine warmth and hospitality will make you want to never leave. This is their own dream come true and so their inspiration and deep passion is contagious to everyone that visits.
This journey has been one of self discovery for Lee-Ann and Louis, a three year adventure which brought about the birth of Klaserie Sands River Camp. At the beginning of 2012 a terrible flood ravaged through the camp leaving it totally and absolutely destroyed. In fact one of the only things to survive was the ostrich egg chandelier in the entrance, the raging waters swept just below it taking doors, decks, trees and furniture with it.
While Louis was brought in to rebuild and restore the camp for the landowner, Lee-Ann joined him and so the adventure began. In the early days they would huddle around their prima stove with a glass of red wine and listen to the roaring lions, or spend time keeping elephants out the garden; even a hippo who frequently visited the camp grounds! As the rebuild and renovation reached completion, Lee-Ann had the opportunity to work on the interiors, and her eye for detail emanated in a camp that is not over decorated, but comfortable and spacious.
The incredible setting of the viewing deck set amongst Marulas, Jackalberrys and Leadwood trees, allows guests to become part of the surrounding environment, while they watch the animals quench their thirst from the waterhole. It is really the magic of this wilderness area, the unassuming nature of the camp and the kindness of the people that make Klaserie Sands River Camp a genuinely unique product. Come and rediscover Africa!
