After completing a commerce degree and five years in the corporate world as a marketing and business development manager, Gordon decided to follow his passions of working in conservation, and later, community development.
Starting in conservation by working as a field guide at private lodges within the Kruger National Park, Gordon found he absolutely loved the experience. He particularly enjoyed doing walking trails, and much of this was done in the Pafuri area, which awakened his passion for birding.
After a few years, Gordon was offered the opportunity to do a master’s degree in community development and emergency management, in Australia. He was fortunate enough to be able to combine his studies with practical work experience in community development, emergency management and natural resource management for government departments within Queensland. This enabled him to then apply these skills internationally in various other countries.
Gordon then embarked on a second master’s degree, this time in environmental management. During this time he was afforded the opportunity to work for Fauna and Flora International in Cambodia. This work was primarily focused on developing community-protected areas (CPAs), securing the legislation of CPAs and the development of Community Based Natural Resource Management plans. The development of these CPAs not only protected biodiversity and ecosystem health, but also allowed rural impoverished communities to sustainably utilize natural resources.
Having met the woman of his dreams, Gordon decided to return to South Africa, and was then fortunate enough to be welcomed to join the team at the beautiful Klaserie Sands River Camp. He is deeply happy to be back in nature and so close to Africa’s beautiful wildlife.
With a Level 3 qualification in Track and Sign, Caswell has 10 years experience tracking at various 5 star lodges within the Greater Kruger Park.
His absolute commitment to finding big game, as well as the smaller inhabitants of our bushveld, has led to amazing sightings and memorable experiences for our guests.
He is gem and we are blessed to have him on our team and part of the Klaserie Sands family!
